Intelligent Additive Manufacturing for improved Fatigue strength of welded connections
Website for IAMFat, an RFCS research project on wire and arc additive manufacturing to improve the fatigue strength of welded steel connections.

The client
Steel research for stronger welded connections
IAMFat (Intelligent Additive Manufacturing for improved Fatigue strength of welded connections) is a European research project funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). It studies how wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) can strengthen welded steel connections and extend their fatigue life.
The consortium brings together nine partners from universities, industry, certification and welding in the Netherlands, Portugal, France and Germany, with case studies in steel bridges, offshore structures and roller coasters.

The challenge
Making a technical project easy to follow
IAMFat combines laboratory tests, numerical models and full-scale applications across seven work packages. Its audience ranges from researchers and engineers to steel fabricators and the European Commission, so the website had to explain wire and arc additive manufacturing without losing the technical detail.
The project also needed a place to share its progress: consortium meetings, publications, a podcast and test results, all within the visibility rules of EU funding.
The brief: a clean, credible website that presents the research, its structure and its partners, and that the consortium can keep up to date on its own.

Website
Research structure, made visual
We designed the website around the project’s own logic. A deep steel blue header with an angled edge carries the welding imagery, while light sections with thin line icons keep the reading calm.
The methodology and the work packages are drawn as diagrams, so visitors can see how material tests lead to small-scale components and, finally, to full-scale mock-ups.
Project overview
A homepage that introduces WAAM, its challenges and the project’s goals in a few lines.
Objectives and methodology
Four objectives with line icons, and a methodology grid from material level to product certification.
Work packages
A diagram of the seven work packages and an accordion with the scope of each one.
Consortium map
Partners on an interactive map of Europe, grouped by role, with search and filters.
Outputs
Publications and the WAAM Talks podcast, each with a direct link to the source.
News
Updates from consortium meetings, tests and publications, also featured on the homepage.

The outcome
A clear home for the project’s research
IAMFat now has a website that explains its research, shows how the work is organised and keeps partners, publications and news in one place, on desktop and mobile, for the whole life of the project.
